Every now and then I am compelled to step out of my comfort zone, off the path, and do something different (like fly to visit my brother in North Carolina next month, all by myself...). But I digress..
I have tried to paint total abstracts, and I’m not very good at it...there just HAS to be something somewhat recognizable in my images. So here you are...three horses. I may or may not continue along this trail, but for the moment my need to step off the path has been satisfied.

Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of your life; you fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
We’ve all had one of THOSE days...one where nothing goes as planned and you run out of hours before you run through your to-do list. Some things might be put off until tomorrow, but on a farm, many things must be done daily or someone or something will suffer.
This old horse has learned to be patient. He knows the routine and the fact that he has been appreciated all his life and now he is rewarded by his caretaker. He is on the daily to-do list and will not be overlooked.
We raise red angus cattle and the bloodlines we use are notoriously known for their docility - a real plus when you are our age and don’t like being squished by cranky cows. After all, I don’t move quite a fast as I used to.

This is Totsy - a heifer that has quite an attitude. She is a calm individual, but also knows what she wants and expects to get it when she wants it. She is also expecting her first calf in March, right about the time of her 2nd birthday. She is also Abbey’s great granddaughter, making her 1/8 dairy and 7/8 Angus, a good combination for a Momma cow that we expect to keep for a long time.

We have raised cattle for 39 years and, like many folks, started out with “black baldies”, cows that were a Hereford/Angus cross. They were good momma cows, but we wanted more. So we stepped up to Simmentals, and I learned to artificially inseminate them, opening a whole world of genetic possibilities. The commercial demand for larger-than-average cattle subsided and we again changed direction and now we have black and red angus cattle (and milk cow, Sophie).

Today I was inspired by the parable of the sower, in the three Synoptic Gospels, Matthew 13:1-23, Mark 4:1-20, and Luke 8:4-15.
I recently purchased 4 pounds of bluebonnet seeds with the idea of sowing my entire driveway and front entryway with a spectacular display anticipated for Spring. I quickly realized that 4 pounds of seeds would cover a good part of Erath County, so after getting my own needs for seeds taken care of, I ventured off in the Gator with my hoe and began planting bluebonnets in front of my neighbors’ gates. I covered at least a dozen entries as well as chatted with a neighbor I hadn’t seen in a while. Half the others I knew well and let them know about my adventure. The others I know, but don’t have their contact info, so I have to be satisfied imagining their pleasure next spring when the flowers surprise them with a display.
Just call me “Johnny Bluebonnet”. There are many seeds to sow, and they aren’t all flowers....
We love RV-ing to the Rockies and one of the prettiest places we found near them has been Pine Dale, Wyoming. Years ago we attended a re-enactment of a Rendezvous which is held yearly in Pine Dale. I acquired a number of excellent images that I have since used in many paintings. I also became Facebook friends with a resident, and she has since shared even more images with me.

This is Julie Early and she is a true cowgirl. Her family has ranched in Wyoming for several generations and she is about as tough and true as they come. That way of life is ending across this country, but those that continue it are our backbone and our history.

Don’t pass up the opportunity to thank a cowboy or cowgirl. You may not have another one.

Wow. It’s been quite a while since I posted on my blog. Time has slipped by and a lot has happened...most of it good. The farm is thriving. Grass is green and cows are happy.

Today was potato harvest day and we are about 1/3 through.

I have been quilting, painting and planting. My three grandchildren are a delight (more on them later). Mike and I are slowing down, but no where near ready to abandon the farm. The key is to find better ways to do everything or hire someone to do it!

Last October, over a year ago, we visited Merideth and her crew in Markham, and Mer and I shopped in her favorite fabric/quilt store. I spotted this pattern on display and just HAD to duplicate it. It is the first quilt I have made in a long time that didn't have a destination in mind before I started it. Much like most of my paintings, I just wanted to do it. It measures 50 X 60.

I had a huge desire to commit to improving my art, and that discipline of painting daily was a proven way to reach that goal. It evolved into an occasional social commentary, a sharing of our farm and a way to communicate with my family. My mother loved the blogs, especially those that included reports on the cows, horses or chickens. I also quoted a Bible verse that somehow seemed appropriate for that day's report.
Sadly, my mother passed away this past June, after complications from diverticulitis. However, I still find myself thinking about writing to her in this blog and being impatient to hear what she thought of the day's commentary. She ALWAYS gave her opinion, and it was usually favorable. She was my biggest fan and rarely wasted any time before telling everyone she met about her artist daughter.
I can thank her for bringing me back to quilting.
The year before Momma died was spent on doctor visits, hospital stays and recovery at her house, home health visits and a routine of me encouraging her to eat and keep moving...with her continuing reassurance that she was fine. Not wanting to be a "burden" she became quite good at concealing her growing weakness and deterioration. She was determined to stay in her home and I promised I would do everything in my power to keep her there.
I stayed at her house frequently. I could not paint there, BUT I COULD SEW! So I set up my sewing machine snd sew I did - over 10 quilts and sampler quilts - which delighted her.
Just like painting, there are as many varied techniques and designs and materials associated with quilting and I am exploring many of them.
This little quilt is a result of "string piecing" using a 10" paper template and a variety of scraps from other projects. And again I have free-style machine quilted it on my sewing machine. I know Momma would approve.
Surfing images that other quilters have posted is a great way to get inspiration. I never use a pattern although I frequently doodle on graft paper with colored pencils. Often, however, the final product looks nothing like the original drawing...rather like life, I suspect.
I cannot believe it's been over a year since I last posted on my blog. Time has certainly flown, and for those of you who have been concerned, let me put your kind hearts at rest. I am fine; my kids are fine; my GRANDKIDS (all 3 of them!) are WONDERFUL, and my sweet hubby is, too.
However, one of the reasons for my lack of time to paint and post here, has joined my Daddy in Heaven. My sweet Momma, the head of the Debbie Grayson Lincoln Fan Club, passed away this past June.
You may remember that she fought and won her battle with colon and lung cancer 4 years ago. However, diverticulitis reared its ugly head and ultimately took her out. I was with her when she breathed her last and joined my Daddy. She leaves a huge hole in my heart that will never be filled, only covered up.
My Momma was one of the main reasons I kept up with this blog - she so enjoyed reading what we were up to - farm activities as well as my painting.
So, you may ask, "What HAVE you been doing" and I will tell you.
While I was caring for Momma in Dallas, I had my sewing machine with me. Setting up my paintings were just way to messy, but I decided to return to one of my other creative loves: QUILTING! It didn't require as much space, I could work at night after putting Momma to bed, and it was something she enjoyed watching me do.
I plan to return to painting, but for now, I thought I would devote some blogs to the quilts I have put together this past year. This is one of the first I assembled using traditional methods and is hand quilted...I have since been learning to free style machine quilt as well as dye my own fabrics.
Stay tuned!
This is my first effort "post first lesson with Nancy Medina". Here is the way I painted this mule the first time.
I have several other paintings I plan to "re-paint" using Nancy's paint palette and techniques. The challenge to teach this old dog some new tricks is on...
Rain is in the forecast this week...fingers crossed. I will be painting either way. It will be too hot or wet. Both conditions will be adequate excuses to keep me in the studio!

I don't attend many painting workshops, and when I do, it's usually with artists that like to paint the same subject matter that I enjoy painting. I have known Nancy Medina since we both started painting daily nearly 10 years ago. She paints floral sill lifes that fairly explode off the canvas with color. She recently offered an on-line painting workshop to share her "secrets" and skills. The advantage of this is that I can "paint with Nancy" any time I wish, since all the lessons are pre-recorded and available at any time over the course of the next 12 months.

This painting is the result of "Lesson 1" and I learned quite a lot - and all of it I can apply to my western paintings! Tomorrow I will post two little paintings of a mule - one that I painted last year and one that I just completed after my first lesson. I can tell a difference...see if you can, too!

This has been an excellent time for me to be staying in the studio. It is beastly hot in Texas, the cows and their calves are grazing at night and staying in the shade during the day, and most of Texas is in the old familiar "praying for rain survival" mode. It was 104 today. The only veggies left to pick in the garden are some unhappy, split tomatoes, bushels of butternut squash, and soy beans (edamame). One lone late blooming peach tree that escaped the last spring frost is delighting me every morning with a half dozen peaches which I eat right off the tree while watching the horses and cows. There are a few pleasures reserved for July in Texas....

Time to head off in more new directions....More to come!
Texas jumped from a wet, downpour, flooded Spring to a hot, windy tumultuous summer. Pockets of flash floods have plagued the state, but fortunately we have been spared.
The garden, again this year, was too wet to weed, and by the time we could get in to harrow, it was harvest time. The good news? We never had to get the sprinklers out. Bad news? The tractor harrow didn't get used either...our default weeding method was mowing between the rows, with the blackeyed peas becoming lost in the high grass. The corn, however, rose above the weeds, but the bugs have had a heyday. The cows have been fed most of it, and that has been a good thing, according to them! Potatoes somehow managed to survived the damp ground as did the green beans, so we actually had a decent crop of the basics.
I did manage to keep the tomatoes weeded and they are just now producing well, as are the butternut squash vines. If you haven't enjoyed Tomato basil soup with fresh cream, you just haven't lived yet.
All three cows successfully calved - 2 heifers and a bull. With two additional foster calves, the pastures are again full of life.
And our family has gown, with daughter, Merideth giving birth to a gorgeous baby boy who has been amazingly calm and easy going and healthy. His sisters seem to approve of him, as well. Life is almost too good to be true and I seem to have way more blessings than I deserve.
Praise God!
I have been playing around with color lately and I have been trying to concentrate on values without being concerned with color. I have a number of artist friends who are experts at this and can render images in assorted hues and always get the value correct - and it appears effortless. Carol Marine is one of those artists. This is something I struggle with, however, as I am a very literal artist. Deviating from the "real" color is very hard for me. But you know something, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks and the old dog can learn to love the learning!
One way to tell if I have gotten the color values correct is to reduce the image, via a photo manipulation program, to a simple black and white image. If the subject is still identifiable and appears shaded correctly, then I know I accomplished my goal.
Life on the farm this past week has been trying. Not only have we experienced more rainfall than I have ever seen, anywhere, any time, but several of our roads in and out are impassable, and we now have to go 9 miles out of our way to avoid the washouts and a bridge condemnation.
On the positive side, the wild flowers abound, the tanks are all full, and the calves and their moms will have grass through the summer! How can I complain about such a small inconvenience of a bridge being out?
With two cows that have recently calved and 2 additional foster calves, it is a muddy chore to get them all fed and the cows milked. We have had constant rain for nearly a month now. We're not in Texas anymore! The good news, I'm getting loads of water reflections images.
The GREAT news is my daughter recently gave birth to my 3rd grandchild, Coleman, and both of them are thriving. I returned home from that exciting event to find Abbey with her brand new heifer baby. The following day, however, she came down with milk fever and had it not been for the swift treatment by my vet, who loves cows as much as I do, we would have lost her. Sophie quickly followed, giving birth to a bull calf. With 2 foster calves added to the herd, it's a sight to see the two cows caring for the 4 babies. AND we still have Elvira, Abbeys heifer, due to calve any day. Babies abound and all are thriving.
No, my eyesight isn't deteriorating, although that is the reason given to explain why Monet's paintings, in his later years, became so loose and colorful. I am in no way comparing myself to that great Impressionist, but I am continuing to explore using globs of paint to suggest an image rather than define it. This forces me to not only work quickly, but also to not linger over the details, which has always been difficult for me. Limiting my palette also forces me to simplify, simplify, which is something I need to do in all aspects of my life....
The garden has not washed away as it did last year, despite torential rains and threats of tornados. Spuds are doing well, ahead of everything else, and corn, beans and peas are all searching for the sun, which is abundant today.
All three cows are getting larger daily and I believe Abbey will lead the pack and calve first. It can't be too soon, either. I did freeze a half dozen gallons of milk before we dried off the cows, but there is nothing like fresh, and although it's nice to take a break from milking, too, I will be happy to resume that chore and fill the frig with cheese and yoghurt and milk again.

I have frequently expressed how grateful I am to be living in an area of Texas chock full of gorgeous horses. I find amazing models everywhere I turn, and I have always had a special admiration of buckskins. Marshal Dillon rode one and so did Ben Cartwright - two admirable TV Cowboys of my youth.

The inspiration of this painting, Smoky, was bred and owned by Kelly Crawford, a long time friend and fellow horse and cow lover. Kelly and her husband, Steven, also lead elk hunts into New Mexico using horses they have bred and trained. Accompanying them on a hunt is on my very long bucket list...

March entered like a lion and went out like a lamb, with April already a balmy 80 degrees. The garden is nearly all planted, and now we wait for May's gulley washers. And babies.
May is not only about thunderstorms this year. We are also waiting for babies - lots of them. In the merry month of May, Sophie, Abbey and Elvira are all due to calve, and my adorable daughter is due to have her third baby, a boy already named and loved and dreamed about. We are all eagerly awaiting Coleman's arrival with the kind of anticipation that only a new grandchild can cause.
This painting is a slight deviation from my normal offering, and I plan to continue with more "experiments". I have been painting a number of commissions lately as well as working on some mosaics, with little time left over to paint for ME!
It looks like February has returned to Central Texas with cold blustery wet weather, and I must say I am glad. We really needed the moisture for the wild flowers, which aren't looking too happy yet. The Texas drought map has grown again, although it's not nearly as bad as last winter.
Life on the farm has been busy with getting the large garden and the raised beds prepped and planted. So far just cool weather veggies are in (potatoes, onions, garlic, spinach, lettuce, beets, radishes and English peas). The rye grass we planted last Fall is getting a welcome wetting, too, so I expect some early green Spring grazing for Sophie and Abbey, who, along with Abbey's heifer, Elvira, are expecting calves mid-May. It's going to be a busy Spring! In addition to calves, my daughter is expecting her third baby, and our first grand-son mid-May, also!
I first painted this image as a smaller warm-up painting. It sold recently, however, which inspired me to render a slightly larger version with a few changes. The desert background came from an image I took in the Nevada desert when Mike and I journeyed to Parumph to participate in a week-long hand gun course. The cowboy comes from a calf-working at a local rancher's. I am so lucky to get invited to the few ranches where they still work cattle on horseback. It's a way of life that is soon to be seen no more, I fear.

It's been a long time since last posting, and I am happy to report that there is no problem - just a busy life keeping me away from this blog (and a third grandchild on the way!) I have been painting, however. In fact, my latest efforts have been mostly cow portraits for fellow cow owning friends of mine.
I have mentioned before that I am a member of a forum that holds on-line conversations regarding the care and feeding of family milk cows (as well as other farm-related critters). We are a diverse, world-wide group that harbors one common trait - we love cows. Like me, there are also many horse lovers and chicken lovers and...you get the idea.
When a member's animal gets hurt or suffers from a cow-related problem, we join forces to help. Member looking for a specific cow to add to their herd? We help. Got a sick calf? We help. Topics of interest range from how to help a cow with milk-fever to when is the best age to butcher a steer (and how to do it yourself) to guessing how close a cow is to calving based upon photos of her rear end.
We all also possess the common desire to know where our food comes from and provide the best nutrients possible to our families - by both raising it ourselves or harvesting local wildlife. I have already put a deer into the freezer this year and have several neighbors promising us another pig (the feral pigs around here are multiplying exponentially).
The garden was a rained-out and then a burned-up disappointment this year, but we still harvested sweet potatoes and green beans. Hey, it's boring, but nutritious! There is always next year...
Daily my cows manage to keep me centered and help me remember that our Lord was born in the humblest of circumstances, yet brought hope and meaning to millions.
May the coming season be blessed for you and bring you joy everlasting.
I follow a blog from a fellow that lives in Cuchara, Colorado, and he has informed his readers that NOW is maximum color viewing for the area. It's an obsession for those who love the mountains to plan a visit during "Maximum Color" time. I have never been there then, but I can imagine it...perhaps it's not accurate, but, hey...it's called "artistic license"!
Yes, Kaydee is a "designer dog" and a model that has been ideal for my mom. I doubt she weighs 3 pounds, but she truly rules the roost at Mom's house. She briefly came to stay with us on the farm while mom was recuperating from surgery 2 years ago, and she convinced our big German Shepherd that she was in charge. We are rich in cattle right now - at least by this small farm's standards. Both cows have 2 LARGE calves they are feeding, and it's time for a couple of them to go to other pastures. This is always a difficult time for me. I cannot help but get attached to these animals entrusted to my care. But I am a meat eater, and I raise meat. Therefore I HAVE to look at them in that light. I can, however, give them the best life possible while they are in my care.
This calf came from a local dairy and was reluctantly nursed
by Abbey and Sophie. Neither one liked him much, so he only got to sneak in and nurse when one of the more favored calves were nursing. I consoled him with scratches and attention when I could (and extra feed in the corral), but he has always been the outcast...the one left out for no apparent reason. He has no name. He's just one of the "Jersey Boys". To name them is to make it even harder to send them on to other pastures. I know there is a sermon in there somewhere.
I took a number of photos of horses while in Colorado this summer - and we all were constantly assaulted by flies, which seem to be worse than ever this year. Perhaps it's the increased rainfall. With every blessing, I supposed there must be a sacrifice of some kind. With rainfall and lush pastures come increased fly populations...nature continues it's balancing act.
