I am still taking every opportunity to attend rodeos, ropings and general good outdoor fun that includes horses and/or cattle. Saturday I went to Dublin (Texas) to watch a Ranch Rodeo that held some interesting events before the actual rodeo was held. An exhibition of Mexican wild bull riding was exciting. The cowboys team roped the bull, threw him to the ground, and tied his legs. Waiting to the side was a some brave (or nutty) kid who climbed on the bull while he was on the ground flat. The cowboys then released the animal who quickly rose and promptly bucked off the young cowboy. No one was hurt, the bull returned to his herd mates and the young man spit the dirt out of his mouth.
And I got some great pictures!

He's No Dummy - bucking bull test

Bucking bulls don't get tested with real people. Too dangerous. First a weighted "dummy" that releases remotely is used. This fellow is getting pretty good at his job - not long before a cowboy rides him. If he'll kick up high in back, he may even end up at a PRCA rodeo.

Out of Sync

I attended another "buck out" Tuesday afternoon and I have come to the conclusion that there must be better ways to get one's adrenaline flowing.
I have been told that bull riders are "adrenaline junkies" and I believe it. Neighbors Toby Floyd and Brad Boyd are partners in the bucking bull business. Together they raise insanely athletic and ill-tempered bulls for rodeos. And during good weather they graciously allow other bull raisers to test the bucking skills of their animals at Toby's facility down the road from us. They also encourage crazy individuals to see how quickly they can land in the hospital with multiple fractures riding these animals.
Fortunately no one got hurt Tuesday, but to me it was a miracle. And I got some great reference photos. My daughter, Merideth, wants me to paint something suitable to go on the front of the Parker County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo Program. I think I got just the image.
Another fun thing happening to me: I was contacted by a lady in Hollywood who is designing a set for an ABC pilot starring Don Johnson called "Southern Discomfort", and she wants several of my paintings for the set. Filming begins in a couple weeks, so this is a rush rush. Fortunately I located 7 of the 9 paintings she is interested in. This REALLY sounds like fun, doesn't it?

I told ya'll I attended a bucking bull test the other day and acquired a number of good images. My daughter has been working with the Parker County Sheriff's Posse lately, as a photographer, and she is urging them to use a painting of mine for their cover of the Rodeo Program this year. I have no idea what they like, but I'm willing to try several images. If you want this, remember it may be used on the cover of a publication. You get the original - I get publicity!

I attended a bucking bull test the other evening and this is one of the crazy young bulls who showed us his credentials. I was on the outside of the arena, 100 feet from him, and he STILL came at me! Thank goodness for stoutly made fencing!
