I keep seeing images of storm clouds on the horizon - sometimes I wake early in the morning dreaming of them. And their colors are so intense, I cannot get back to sleep. So I reluctantly get up and quietly join the cold air in the studio and begin another day.
I have had this image of the cowboy for quite some time and just today felt compelled to put him on a ledge with the brilliant, forbidding sky. Fortunately he is prepared with the slicker tied to his saddle - maybe he'll survive the storm unfazed.

Counting the Herd

This brave counts the number of bison in the herd, and his heart is heavy with the obvious news that their numbers are declining. For years his people have depended upon the bison for survival, killing only what is needed, leaving the rest. Every part of the animal is used - nothing is wasted. Without them, their way of life is threatened; their very existence is in peril.
So understandably the brave is worried. He does not know what the future holds, but a future without the bison is bleak.
I, on the other hand, know exactly where my future lies - in Heaven with my Father. And declining numbers of anything will not affect that future!

I am in down time now - closet cleaning, planning the garden, food storing and making sausage (from a wild pig brought to me by a friend). So I am starting small projects that I know I can finish - good for moral!

Cowboy Up 2

"Cowboy up" means owning up to your mistakes, fixing them, if possible, and then getting on with life with the lesson learned and a resolve to be a better man (or woman) because of it. Like the term "Put your big panties on"!
This is the second time I have painted this image. This one was requested by a lovely lady in Germany who is also buying another painting with a colorful sky background.
The best part of my job is the art lovers I get to "meet" from around the world - both the collectors as well as the artists. The Daily Painters are scattered around the globe. If I were younger (and richer) it might be a fun goal to travel and meet everyone. We have several artists in the Netherlands and UK, as well as Norway, Belgium, France, Chile and Canada. What an interesting trip THAT would be!

Barren, blazing landscape with a mare and foal undecided as to what direction to take. I actually saw this in a dream. I often dream of potential paintings, but I rarely paint them because they are usually so surreal. For a while I am going to follow through on those images and put them to canvas, or, as in this case, on masonite. I see a lot of reds and oranges in my dreams, too, so it looks like I will be using a lot of the cadmiums - expensive dreams!

High Tail Heat - running arabian mare painting

It's really hard NOT to use warm colors during this heat wave in Texas. This is a friend's Arabian mare - feeling frisky and not wanting to be caught. I was amazed she had so much energy in 100+ degree weather.

Our pastures are crispy and I am concentrating on watering trees now - the grass will have to survive on its own now. Mike mowed yesterday and I asked him to feed the clippings to my horses. I had been putting them on the garden as mulch, but there's not much left to protect there, either - a few cantaloupe and the deer-nibbled sweet potatoes.

It's almost time to plant a fall garden, but for the life of me, I can't see how anything will get a start in this heat. There is cool front and rain north of here this afternoon, though, along the Red River. I pray it makes it south to us. Please, God?

Palo Duro Canyon 5

I am still playing around with painting the canyon in anticipation of doing it much larger. This one is mostly palette knife with lots of colorful paint. I have a wonderful patron who has supplied me with several fabulous photos of Palo Duro and I am using quite a bit of artistic license with them!
I will have to be careful where I place this one to dry, as it will take longer than usual with so much paint on it. I have been given a little kitten who is temporarily living in the studio. Georgia knows not to "touch" but the kitten is eons away from acquiring manners. I have to be careful to place her in the bathroom when I walk out of the studio, too. I have forgotten a couple times, but so far have avoided any mishaps (such a kitten prints through my paint palette!) Hmmm - that could be a new painting technique......

Tuffy - bay paint horse oil painting

Tuffy was aptly named. His right ear has a bite taken out of it, undoubtedly by another horse that he was aggravating. Tuffy evidently didn't learn his lesson, though, because he still insists that he is boss, despite the fact that he is only 14 hands. A horse with a Napoleon complex! I admire his tenacity.
Tuffy boarded at our place for a couple months and roomed with Easy, which was an OK arrangement. Easy gets along with everyone, so long as they leave Dandy alone. I had to put Dandy and her momma in a separate pasture to avoid squabbles. Horses usually work these things out eventually - but not always without injury. So rather than risk bruises or worse (bitten off ears!) we just kept the girls separate. Tuffy is actually one of the prettiest paints I have had the pleasure of riding. His markings are quite balanced and he has a classic chiseled head. He's supposed to come back for another stay later, and I look forward to getting more photos of him.

Let Me Scratch This First

Georgia, the Border-Collie-Wanna-Be, plays tag with the calves. They all understand that it's "time out" when she has an itch, though. Incredibly, the calves wait respectfully while she scratches, and then the game resumes!

I arose this morning to a crystal blue sky and a view of the horses still standing at the big hay bale we brought them yesterday afternoon. It does not look as if they budged all night and the bale is considerably smaller already. I'd better watch out for belly aches - PJ has been known to eat herself sick.

The Koi pond has held up well so far this summer and I have glimpsed at least 3 little baby fish - about 4 inches long. I don't always visually catch the koi spawning every year - but I did this year. In two days, the pond was thick with eggs and then for the next 2 days, the fish feasted on them. I am always amazed that any babies survive at all, but every year there are several. I usually catch them in the fall and put them in the various stock water tanks or give them to friends - unless there is an exceptionally brilliant colored one. Then I keep it. And that has led to another problem - I now have over 20 fish in a pond that should only have 10 or fewer. Should the pump fail during the hot weather, it would be a matter of hours before the fish would be in serious trouble, oxygen-wise. Guess it's time to dig a bigger pond, huh???!!! Just what we need: another project....

Dandy Update

It's gotten pretty dry in this part of Texas - despite the fact that DFW has received feet of rain - yes "FEET". We are sixty miles south/west of Ft Worth, and we have had only had a couple inches all spring and only gotten one cut of hay with no more anticipated in the near future. So we committed to purchasing several large bales to get the horses through the next few months - and the first was delivered to them today. Four hours after delivery and they haven't lifted their heads yet. When I walked out at dusk to photo them, one at a time they came over for me to scratch their tummies and one at a time returned to the bale. I know where I stand in the order of affection - hay comes first! I thought the big bale MIGHT last a week. Now I'm thinking a couple days. At least the pasture grass will have some relief....

I Never Saw a Purple Cow

One of my Daddy's favorite poems to quote when he was in a silly mood was "I never saw a purple cow, I never thought I'd see one. But I tell you this right now: I'd rather see one than be one." I'm not really sure if there's some really deep philosophical meaning in that poem - but I do know that it made a little girl giggle every time she heard it.

Race to the Flames

Facing the flaming future fearlessly. I love alliteration - especially in art! Talk radio has been ominous lately. I don't know what to believe, but I refuse to run and hide. My art will reflect this for a while, I think.

I have been having a number of conversations with God lately and most of these talks have centered around death. Not just my own, but people close to me. I lost my father 25 years ago, and I still miss him, but I have no doubt where he is and that I'll see him again. I still have my adorable mother and both my incredible in-laws in my life - and they, too, are going where I'm going. Hopefully, not soon, but every one's path terminates eventually and the older you get, the more you think about it.

I had a revelation the other day as I was drying my hair over the air conditioning unit outside (this has been my practice for a number of years). After we die (if we believe in God, that is) so MANY questions are answered. I have always been a questioner, and I always want to know how stuff works, and why we do something a certain way, etc. I cannot WAIT to have all my questions answered. That ALONE makes the future less ominous. I'm still gonna paint flames for a while, though, because I like them.

Face the Flames

A topic on the radio today forecast the end of the world in 2012. Scary stuff and late-night food for thought, to be sure. I prefer not to think about it, but I DO try to live my life today as if there was no tomorrow - here in THIS world, at any rate.

Regardless of the future, we need to face it, head on, without fear. This painting is purely from my imagination - rare for me. I may need to paint the image in a large format - if you are interested, please contact me for a commission. I am leaning toward the most colorful, semi-abstract images right now, and I would really enjoy doing some BIG canvases!

This horse is a lovely mare belonging to friend Marie (owner of that gorgeous black and white arab/paint foal). This mare has a cute foal, too and I'll probably paint her eventually.

That reminds me: I haven't had a "Dandy update" lately. She's still growing with no problems. She's not yet as big as her dam, but she could be close by next spring. I honestly won't mind if she stays under 15 hands, either. Plans are for her to be the grandkids' horse so smallish is good. Next spring we will begin some groundwork with her - and put a saddle on her for the first time. Given her size, we may wait until next fall, or even the following spring to do any kind of "hard" training. It has been common practice for horse breeders to start training their animals at two years of age - and in many cases for thoroughbreds, before that age. Quite often the body appears ready, but the mind is not. And quite often, neither are ready. Since I intend to keep Dandy forever and want the best health from her, I will give her bones ever chance to fully mature. And since competition is not an issue, there is no need to rush training....

Palo Duro Inspiration

The colors in Palo Duro Canyon change dramatically with the time of day and the seasons of the year. We spent a crisp November week camping there several years ago and I cannot wait to go again.
I have a potential collector who has sent me photos from the canyon along with a commission request. At this point I am experimenting with color and composition. I have already painted this site several times, and each time the resulting image changes - much like the canyon itself.
I still have several other ideas in my head - so keep watching!

Windy Day

It's looking like the spring rains are over and summer is in full swing here in Texas - hot, drying winds and hot cloudless skies. This is Easy last Fall at the end of a very hot summer.

I have been extremely busy for the past several weeks and have been unable to find a block of time to paint. So far I have canned over 48 quarts of green beans and dug bushels of onions and potatoes. This afternoon we begin to harvest the sweet corn. I couldn't wait and picked 6 ears last night - a little early - but they were so good! Today I expect to get at least 50 ears and they'll be off the cobb before I go to bed tonight. Tomatoes are beginning to turn pink, too, so my time to paint may again be limited. This is all in a effort to prove that we CAN really live off our farm. Now if I can only entice the deer and turkies to hang around WITHOUT eating the garden!
