From the Top of Capulin

6 X 8 Oil on Masonite $110
Includes shipping and insurance SOLD
On our trips to Colorado and beyond, we usually make our first overnight stop near Capulin Volcano National Monument in New Mexico. After passing through there dozens of times and always saying, "One time we need to climb the volcano", we finally did last summer.
This extinct volcano is relatively young, geologically speaking. It's eruption ended 10,000 years ago, and it's pretty neat to hike up it and go down in the crater. It rises about 1000 feet above the New Mexico plains and from its top, you can see the old lava flows. The view is spectacular!
I was reviewing some photographs from last summer, planning next week's line up of paintings, and I think it's time to do some landscapes. As much as I love the horses, I have had some requests for Texas Big Bend paintings - and cacti (yes, Bud, I mean YOU!) Looks like it's time for another road trip - Big Bend should be in full bloom about now....
Isaiah 35:2
it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God

Prickly Pear by the Rio Grande

16 X 20 Oil on Canvas SOLD

A recent trip to Del Rio resulted in many, many photos of prickly pear cactus. In my opinion the plant is quite attractive in a sculptural sort of way. I really like the twists and turns the "leaves" take in an effort to get the most from sunlight. I know several ladies in my community who make jelly from the fruit, too, but it takes more effort than I care to muster. And the thorns are the devil to deal with!

Matthew 13:39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels..

Studio is progressing nicely. By the end of yesterday, most of the lower framing had been completed. Two ceiling beams are required because the span is quite long (38 feet) and a decision was made regarding their placement. How the bathroom and closet tie in to the ceiling was another decision. AND what to do with the vent in the brick wall. It looks like we'll need another 500 bricks, too. I need to start thinking about cabintry and countertops and fixtures. As soon as the windows are installed and off the front porch, I'll probably hit Home Depot or Lowes.
The addition's roof line is the same in front as the existing house, but we are going to bite the bullet and reroof the entire house with metal - so we don't have to be concerned with matching the existing composition shingles. The house is nearly 12 years old - this ought to be the last roof for us.

Wyoming Pasture Rock

The face of this rock looks to be a climber's dream - solid with plenty of hand-holds. I took a photo of this formation from my truck last summer while crossing Wyoming. The pasture was lush and rolling, the firs were waving gently in the breeze and the picturesque cedar fence followed the terrain for a mile. And then this huge rock rose up spectacularly from out of the earth. A house up there would be way neat, but you'd have to use a helicopter to come and go!
9 X 12 oil on canvas board. $100 from me until it joins the others in the gallery.

Heading For Home

I'm not really finished with this one yet, but I wanted to post it anyway. I'll swap the improved version later.
I seem a bit obsessed with clouds and storms and turmoil lately. Perhaps I am reflecting the mood of the stock market or maybe it's the fact that we are starting construction on the studio Saturday. I am not in turmoil over that, just anticipating the usual construction dilemmas. Hopefully Saturday we'll be getting the foundation forms in so the sand can be delivered and the plumber can do his work. We have one more tree to move and both my horses to another pasture - where there is no barn for winter shelter. Oh well, I guess they'll have to be horses! If the weather turns really bad, I can put them in stalls in the barn. But they both hate being locked up, so we may settle for blankets.

This painting is a 16 X 20 oil on stretched canvas, and I have a gorgeous free-form Texas Mesquite frame for it. Contact me before I send it to the gallery if you are interested.

Run For The Hills

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Yesterday I was able to paint for several hours and I think I am settling in to a style that I really like. I'm making the colors work for me. This action-packed painting shows a herd of horses running across the plains in anticipation of the storm that's coming. Sometimes I feel I do the exact thing - running before the storm arrives, rather than preparing for it so I am ready. The storm is not here yet, but the panic has already set in.

Grand Canyon

This is the second Grand Canyon painting I have done this month and it's better than the first. I think I'm getting the feel of the colors and depth. I visited this "wonder" as a child - I think I was around 12 - and even then my childish brain was impressed and astounded. We plan to visit again in the near future, but I don't plan to take the donkey trip to the bottom. I understand that the tail is narrow, winding and at times, really scary. I will be content with the view from the top!
This 6 X 8 oil on Masonite is available directly from me for $100.

Windmill

Windmills are pretty much universal across this country. This windmill in Wyoming looks almost exactly like the one that was next door to us in our first home near Stephenville. It was a wooden structure, too, and great for climbing, if you dared. It also had large, spreading tree nearby and an oval, flat holding tank that was nice to take a swim in. Our neighbor's windmill also fed a small pond that was stocked with catfish and bass. When the wind was just right, I could hear the blades squeaking when they turned.....

Ft Davis Texas Officers Quarters

This is one of the old officer's quarters at Ft. Davis, Texas. Fort Davis is a National Park and one of the best surviving examples of a Southwest military post. The soldiers there protected mail, freight wagons and immigrants during the second half of the 19th century. It lies on the trail between El Paso and San Antonio. After the Fort was closed, many of the homes on the site were rented, but have remained unoccupied and deteriorating for a number of years. The buildings are slowly being restored, though, and it's a fascinating place to visit. Close by in the Davis Mountains is the McDonald Observatory and it's on the way (sorta) to Big Bend National Park. And if you want to see what it's like to be really in the dark and see the stars as our ancestors did - visit the Observatory. The surrounding countryside has "light ordinances" so that civilization doesn't interfere with the telescope's performance. You will see stars like you've never seen them before - especially if you live in the city.

Grand Canyon Sunset

Friends that we RV with just got back from the Grand Canyon and shared this image with me. I have been reading quite a lot lately about new ideas as to how it was formed. Now scientists think that it might have occurred quite quickly - possible when a glacier formed dam burst and huge volumes of water washed through and carved the canyon. Regardless of the method, the result is incredible and breath taking. I saw the Grand Canyon years ago as a child during a whirlwind family vacation through the southwest. Next time I intend to see it at my leisure and marvel at it's wonders.

Easy Meal

Eating is important to horses. This horse has a whole pasture full of really nice green grass to eat, and yet she still stands in front of this bale of hay and munches. Rather like the grasshopper from Aesop's Fable - taking it easy and not worrying about tomorrow.

This little 8 X 10 oil on canvas panel is available for $50 from me this week or can be found on eBay during next week's auction. dglincoln@embarqmail.com
Matthew 6:30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? (this is one of my favorite Bible verses!!!!!)

Follow Me

This is another small (6 x 8) attempt to make friends with the bristle brush again! And to get the color right portraying distance and heat.

We have raised many babies on our farm - both four legged and two legged - and they were all quite good at following Momma. Some mommas were better than others at leading, but all have been fiercely concerned when it came to looking after their little ones.

This painting will be offered on eBay next week and is available for purchase directly from me now, dglincoln@embarqmail.com.

Room WIth a View

SOLD
I don't think many folks realize how close we came to losing the American Bison. They once blackened the plains and were the main source of everything for the native people of this country. By 1886 the herds of over 60 million had been reduced to about 1100. That's so close to extinction, it's amazing they have made the recovery they have.
This painting makes me wonder what it must have been like for the last buffalo in a particular area. Bison are herd animals and like horses and cows, need companionship of their own kind to thrive. How lonely he must have been.

This painting is available for purchase.

Psalm 25:16Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.

On His Own

While attending a rodeo roping a couple summers ago I witnessed a horse roll and lose his rider. The cowboy was unhurt and in fact continued to chase his calf on foot! The horse casually strolled toward the exit of the arena as I took his picture. This painting evolved from that horses' quiet demeanor and dejected low head carriage. I don't know why this horse is alone or how long he has been on his own (probably not long because only one rein is dragging.) I DO know that I am never alone.

God's Country

Everyone thinks where they live is "God's country" and Texans are no different. But somehow I think that those who live in the mountains have a more valid claim on that description. Mike and I love exploring the Rockies and this summer journeyed to the Tetons as well. In south/central Colorado there is a National Park campground that is 10,000 feet high and has a lake that never fails to thrill me. It's getting crowded now and we actually almost didn't snag a campsite this year - for the first time in 7 years of camping there. Bear Lake is its name and it's in the middle of the Sange de Cristo Mountains surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest near Cuchara. THAT is God's country, for sure, and the only way we have survived these past 5 years of heat and drougth in Texas was knowing that we would be there for one sweet, cool week in August.

Knowing where I'll spend eternity is also a good way to get through the pains and tribulations of this earthly life.

2 Corinthians 5:1[ Our Heavenly Dwelling ] Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

By the way, Heaven is mentioned in the Bible at least 606 times.

It's Smart to Bring a Spare

Mike and I spent the entire month of June 2007 wandering around Colorado, Wyoming and Montana with our 2 dogs and the RV. One experience that I really enjoyed was the rodeo in Cody, Wyoming. I am trying new painting subjects and techniques, but my favorite still is cowboys and their horses.
This painting was inspired by a cowboy exercising his horse and leading a second one behind the grandstand at the rodeo. The late afternoon light was perfect and I quickly envisioned the Wyoming landscape in the background, using one of my many reference photos. The title, “It’s Smart to Bring a Spare” was easy to conceive, since we have experienced the aggravation of flat tires while RVing! Planning ahead is always smart both for traveling and for where you’ll spend eternity….

This painting is available for purchase in my eBay store. Search "debbie lincoln" in the eBay home page to find it and others.
