PJ Walking Good

5 X 7 Oil on Canvas board $115
Includes Shipping and Insurance in US
OK - I admit it - I was having withdrawal pains from the horse images...So here is PJ walking pretty good after recovering from laminatis. PJ is 16 years old and has never missed a meal - in fact she has helped herself to other's meals, as well. As a result she has a tendency to develop laminitis when she overeats on high carbohydrate grasses and/or grains. Especially if it hasn't been in her diet all along.
We had a wonderful 4 inch rain about 12 weeks ago (the ONLY rain all summer), and the grass blossomed - and so did PJ's belly...and she pigged out. I was remiss in not locking her up (or at least muzzling her!), and she developed laminitis in her front feet.
Yesterday afternoon, I caught her actually running with the others - a good indication that recovery has taken place. PJ doesn't run unless she feels really good (or there is a meal in front of her!)
Numbers 17:8
The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron’s staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.

Like Mother Not Like Daughter?

9 X 13 Oil on flat canvas $125
Check with me for availability

Little Dandy started out life the same color as her momma - bright sorrel. But as Spring and Summer passed, she morphed into the color of her grand-dam, Miss Jack, who was registered as brown, but turned a gorgeous black in winter. Children do that too - start out like one parent or another and suddenly they become like a grandparent, too. My mom has a creative, mathematical mind, and we share many traits. My daddy had a goofy sense of humor and a salesman's gift of gab. But my artistic genes come from my mom's mother, my grandmother who I called "Itee". It was Itee that first put a paintbrush in my hand and taught me how to draw and compose and manipulate oil paint. She was a teacher with an artist's soul who didn't actually start painting until she was middle aged. She's been gone for more than 20 years now, but I still have some of her old art supplies - including her student easels and her paint box. I like to think she watches me as I paint and smiles. Thanks, Itee, for the genes!

All in the Family

7.5 X 12 Canvas on 3/4 inch board $125
Includes shipping and insurance within US
SOLD to a collector in California
I thought you might enjoy seeing how I put a particular painting together: four separate pictures of my animal family into one painting. This is also an experiment in mounting canvas on board. The board is a leftover piece of pre-fab shelving; very heavy and 3/4 inch thick. I like the heft of it and the fact that it shouldn't warp at all. I am going to try the same technique on masonite for comparison. I probably could buy the same product for very little more, but I like the fact that I am not restricted to a certain size - or have to cut something to fit the size I need - or wait for an order to arrive. Some paintings demand to be a certain dimension and no ready-mades will do.
A little more information on the upcoming BIG SALE. All little paintings that have not sold (or are not in galleries) as of November 1 will be available for half price for TWO WEEKS. Some of the ones I have painted recently will be going to a gallery next week, if they haven't sold for the original price here first. I will mark them "unavailable" on both the Daily Painter website and and here on my blog. PLEASE e-mail me first before you PayPal me, to be SURE the painting you want is still available. The yellow rose that was posted a couple days ago has sold - and it WAS going to a gallery, so that collector was smart to jump on it quickly!

Just Like a Man

24 X 30 on Gallery wrapped 3/4" canvas

Here's my bison buddy again, with his tongue hanging out (he was chasing a cow - hence the title!). I believe the name of this painting is self-explanatory!
Warm umbers and browns with hints of ultramarine and violets make this painting a real popping eye catcher. Everyone who has seen it in the studio this week has loved it!
Exodus 4:10
Moses said to the LORD, "O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue."

I rarely comment on the Bible verses that come to me for my blog, but this one I have to. Those of you who know the story of Moses, know that Moses really didn't think he was worthy of the huge job the Lord had chosen him for. He was NOT a public speaker; neither glib or fast thinking at all (unlike so many of today's politicians.) But God knew what was in his heart and that he would rise to what was needed of him. The Bible is filled with less-than-perfect people that the Lord called upon to spread his word and do his work. Less than perfect people, just like you and me.

On a lighter note, I am delighted to announce that 12 year old PJ didn't forget all the training I put into her while she was gestating and raising Dandy. The weaning is going well without too much loud whinnying and frantic running, and today I saddled her up and worked a little bit in the round pen. I am pleased to report that she has remained supple and light, although she quickly worked up a sweat. But like most good trainers say, "The best training is a wet saddle pad," and I agree.
After our ride, I hosed her off, trimmed her face and bridle path so she'd be pretty again and I let her graze in the long grass in the front yard where she could really excel in what she does best: eating!
My Mom is probably having a fit finding out that I am riding again. I got hurt pretty bad 1 year and a half ago on PJ - but it wasn't her fault. We were having fun in the pasture chasing cows. I zigged when PJ zagged and flew out of the saddle, hit the ground and broke 2 ribs clean through. That took at least 6 months to heal and another 6 months to quit hurting. But I learned my lesson - I promise, Mom! No more wild stuff - just easy riding - and PJ will appreciate that, too...The main problem now is that riding will bite into my painting time. But my heart will be happier.
