#45 Cow Times 3

6 X 8 Oil on board
$125 includes shipping and insurance
Weather remains interesting in my little corner of the world. More tornadoes and threatening weather all around us, yet we remain dry. I am heartened by the knowledge that much of Texas HAS received rain and therefor I should be able to buy hay this summer.
I am nearly ready to quit milking Miss Abbey in preparation of her expected calf in July. I did find a source of raw milk to fill in the nearly 2 month lapse. The Veldhuizen Farm of Dublin, Texas milks a select herd of mostly Jersey cows and sells milk, cheese and yoghurt from a store at the dairy. Mike and I went there today and got our "fix" for a week. My tummy need not be disappointed while we wait for Abbey's calf!
Be sure and tune in tomorrow - I have another time-lapse video of painting one of these cows in the series.

#44 Cow Color Study 2

8 X 6 Oil on board
$125 includes shipping and insurance
Same cow, different verse. This one has a lot of paint, and I used a palette knife on most of it. I think I will do 4 totally different palettes and maybe mount them all together on one panel - unless they sell separately.
The cow that I am using as a model is owned by Tamara and she lives halfway around the world in Queensland, Australia. The cow's name is rather dramatic - Tallulah - but I understand her to be sweet and kind.
Thanks, Tamara~

6 X 8 Oil on Board

Hard to resist a cute child with a calf, isn't it? This is a fellow milk lover's daughter and heifer calf, Hazel.
Kids learn a lot, growing up on a farm, with the circle of life being one of the most important. A difficult experience to share with a child is the death of a beloved pet. On a farm, death is inevitable, but then again, so is life, and the promises it implies. Hazel's life is a promising one, for sure.

I am going to paint this cow a number of different ways using various techniques and colors. This one is fairly conventional. I am hoping to deviate from the norm and force myself into a new dimension.
My mother is going to have surgery next week and I will go stay with her for a bit. She suggested I bring my paints to her house - her porch has great light and I think I will take her up on it. I cannot remember the last time she saw me paint - certainly not recently. Maybe a different environment will send my right brain into new directions as well....

For the Love of a Cow

Image about 5 X 7   Sharpie on drawing paper
$25 includes shipping
I am evolving into a huge admirer of cows.
We have had cows for over 30 years - from half breed mutt cows of undetermined ancestry to noble, long-pedigreed heritage Simmentals. Right now we have 4 bovines. One is a cow that came to me as a black Jersey. I suspect she is part Angus, however, but it doesn't really matter - her milk is good regardless of the label. Her name is Abbey and she is our family milk cow. I have done a bit of studying lately on the history of cows and the best description I have read declared them to be the greatest solar energy users out there. Think about it. They turn sun-grown-grass which is pretty much unusable by us folks with a single stomach into milk, meat, and fertilizer. How efficient is that?
I have truly grown to love my little Abbey cow. It has taken over a year, but we have such a nice relationship now - I no longer have to argue with her when I want milk - she willingly shares it twice a week. And the rest of the time she feeds 2 adopted calves.
Abbey is due to have another calf in 2 months, so we have started the process of drying her up. The calves have been removed and I am milking her less and less to encourage her to stop producing milk. It's a sad time for me - I will miss our milking sessions together. But I am looking forward to her next calf and hoping it will be a heifer this time, that I can raise to be possibly another family milk cow.
And then there's Miss Sophie - another post, another time....
Matthew 26:22
They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

This is "Sushi-Moo" showing her classic pouting calf face. Hard to not smile at that face...
We had bad storms through this little part of Texas yesterday with a number of tornadoes instantly changing the direction of a number of people's lives. Six people are confirmed dead with as many still missing. Please continue to pray for the folks in Granbury and Cleburne as we begin to clean up and put lives back together.

#40 Over There - longhorn cow and calf in bluebonnets

8 X 6 Oil on board
This painting is SOLD
The bluebonnets have been less than spectacular this year. I did find some good stands on the way to West last week, but since much of Texas was in the grips of drought last August, the thick, lush patches of Texas' state flower are difficult to find. We irrigate our pecan trees on our long driveway,  so those that grow there did make a nice show, but it was the only patch in our entire neighborhood.
The English peas are beginning to fill out and we ate a pot full last night, and then I picked a bucket for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day.
The baby turkeys are also getting bigger by the day. Right now they are in a box in the studio bathroom. Trudy thinks they are her responsibility and checks on them regularly. She is a true shepherd in every definition of the word.
Remember to hug your Momma, if you can, today, remember the Angel Mommas,  and thank all those who have mothered you!

#39 Crossed Purposes - cowboy and cow

6 X 6 Oil on board
Check with Artist for Availability
It's calf working time-of-year and my favorite for acquiring new images of my preferred subjects - horses and cows and cowboys. Lee Clay's ranch in Morgan Mill hosts one of the best get-togethers. Lee invites friends and family (especially the kids) to come share in the dirt and blood and excitement of working spring calves.
Assignments are made and everyone has a job. From tracking the heifers and bulls (this year 99 calves were counted - 49 heifers and 50 bulls) to manning the inoculation syringe; from keeping the branding iron hot to sitting on the squirming calf...everyone gets involved. And all ages and genders get to rope!
Hebrews 13:16

#38 Talking Cow

8 X 6 Oil on Board
Contact Artist for availability
I have been cussed at by a cow many times, and Mike had it done to him tonight. Tomorrow is a milking day, which means Abbey spends the night in the small corral, separated from "the boys", her foster calves. Mike went out with a bucket of feed to call her up and of course Sophie comes bounding in the lead to be first in line. Her enthusiasm was short lived as she was promptly shut off from the goodies intended for the "queen", Aunt Abbey. Sophie will get her chance this fall when she has her own calf and joins Abbey in the milking line up. But until then, we will just endure her pouting and cussing.
I send grateful appreciation to Karen for this image, a fellow contributor on the Keeping a Family Cow information forum. She says she is NOT a professional photographer, but her images say otherwise...

#37 Marwtini

6X6 Oil on board
Check with artist for availability
This is Simone Karol's Arabian filly foal, Marwtini. Isn't she cute? I was just a teeny bit crazy with the unusual colors, keeping to a limited palette of blue and orange red. I may experiment with this when it dries and glaze it with a green tint, just to see what happens...
This week has been interesting on the farm - culminating with catching this lovely 4 1/2 foot bull snake on the back porch. The dogs had him cornered on one of the patio chairs. I relocated him to the creek, but I suspect he'll be back. Hopefully the chicken coop is still fortified well enough to keep him out. He cannot eat a chicken, but he could wreak mayhem with the eggs!

Texas Sunset - right outside my studio window!

12 X 16 Oil on canvas mounted on board
Check with Artist for Availability
Wow - you wouldn't know it today that it's Springtime in Texas. The thermometer is supposed to drop into the 30's tonight. Guess I'll be out covering tomatoes, although I'm pretty sure they'll be OK - they've been out for a while now and are pretty hardy.
We have been working around the clock for the past couple weeks changing up the way we garden. We have built 4 raised beds in the "little" garden and filled them with a wonderful mixture of compost made from leaves, grass, and assorted manures. Never thought I could be so excited about varieties of poop!
The  big garden has had a layer of alpaca poop spread on it and the potatoes and English peas have survived the reoccurring frosts fairly well. In addition I have finished planting the corn, black eyed peas, purple hulls and green beans. The onions planted last fall from seed are beginning to make bulbs and the cows are getting chopped beets almost daily, although they don't really need it as we actually HAVE GRASS!
Abbey's 2 calves are getting quite big and since it's almost time to let her have a 2 month rest, I'll be listing them for sale soon. She is due to calve in July which means I'll be without fresh milk starting mid-May. Hopefully my tummy will understand...
More farm reports: The 14 chicks that hatched in the incubator 6 weeks go are all doing well and it looks like half are roosters - following the odds. Guess we'll be eating stewed chicken here in a couple months...
I have also ordered 10 turkeys from the feed store (it was the fewest I could get). I cannot imagine containing 10 turkeys, so I expect I will sell at least 6 of them on Craig's List. Ideally I would like to keep 2 for breeding and eat the rest. Turkeys are unpredictable, though, so we'll just go with the flow on this endeavor.
Oh, I almost forgot the most exciting news of all: I CAUGHT A BEE SWARM! Our bees had been acting restless for several days. I was heading out to the corral to check on something and when I walked under the cedar elm, I heard a loud buzzing and I wondered briefly why the bees were around a tree with no blossoms...? I look up and saw a hug football-sized wad of bees about 15 feet up. WOW! I ran to get Mike to bring me a ladder, a box and a saw while I hurriedly donned my beekeeping garb and mixed some sugar water spray. As it turned out, I really didn't need to be so cautious. While they flew madly around me as I sawed off the limb they were clinging to, none landed on me or even tried to sting. It was unnerving at first and I was shaking all over, but it was exhilarating, too!
We called our friends, fellow beekeepers, and offered the swarm to them, as they had lost theirs due to cold this past winter. PLUS they are our alpaca poop providers and I feel we are still getting the best end of the deal! Boy, this has been a busy Spring!

# 36 For the Love of Goats

8 X 10 Oil on Canvas
Check with Artist for Availability
This adorable creature is owned by Caitlyn Menne of Oregon and is a Nubian dairy goat. At 20 years of age, Caitlyn describes herself as "a jack of all trades, and master at none, I dabble in this and that. Farmer, writer, goat raiser, herbalist, aspiring cheese maker, spinner, teacher — if pushed for a straightforward answer, I'll say that I'm a grass farmer; pure and simple." Caitlyn raises these beauties and has lofty plans for them which you can read about HERE.
My little part of Texas has received 3 small rains in the past 3 weeks and for that we are very grateful. We are not, however, grateful for the frost we are supposed to endure tonight. The tomatoes are covered, the chicks are in the coop and the calves are bedded. The weather isn't nearly as bad as that of some of my northern friends, but is not natural for April anywhere! With the exception of one late peach, all the fruit trees bloomed early and lost their fruit to 2 other late frosts, so I have just about written off that crop.
We are proceeding with the construction of 4 raised vegetable beds. Two are completed with two to go. I can only build one at a time - Mike moves the bricks with the tractor's front loader, but they still have to placed after the ground is leveled, and that is back breaking. We scraped the bottom of the old pond before the rains hit and have a huge pile of sediment that we are placing in the bottom of the beds. In addition I have a gigantic leaf/grass compost pile and tons of composted manure from the barn to top it all off. I may not get much else planted this year, but these beds should be producers - IF we can keep the chickens out of them!

#35 - Jessica's Cow

Farm chores are adding up - we are building raised beds this spring because my poor back just can't stand bending over much longer. I have been assured that this will be helpful - time will tell.
I am still painting farm animals from images sent to me by fellow farmers, cow owners and just plain animal lovers. This cow belongs to Jessica who is 14 years old and owns 14 cows! In her own words "I always say if you don't dream big you won't achieve big. Long live cowgirls."

#34 - Dexter Heifer in the Snow

5X7 Oil on Panel
Check with artist for availability
Over 30 years ago, we had a lovely family milk cow that we called simply "Red Cow". She was a beef cow and we thought part Milking Shorthorn. Not only did she deliver lovely, beefy calves, but she also supplied my family with wonderful fresh milk. She was small, stocky, compact and efficient. And her personality was delightful as well...much like the Dexter breed of cattle. I have often thought if I could find another like her, I would do what it took to bring her home. Only other "cow people" understand what it's like to reminisce about "cows past".
We are in the middle of reworking the garden. The big "truck garden" is staying the same - we can do most of the hard work in that area with a tractor. But the small garden (which must be protected from hungry critters like marauding chickens) is getting more and more compromised by trees and shade and gets harder to till every year . So we are scaling it down by concentrating on 4 raised beds (easier on the back) that will be enclosed in a chicken-proof fence. This is no easy project for two 60+s with bad backs. Thank God for mechanical help in the form of front end loader tractors.

This lovely Jersey is Tallulah and her precocious Jersey/Dexter calf, Ginger. This image comes all the way from Queensland, Australia thanks to Tamara.
Tamara declares she lives with a menagerie of horses, an alpaca, goats, chickens, peafowl, guineas, turkeys, geese, cats, dogs and birds - as well as the the native Australian wildlife consisting of kangaroos, koalas, and too many more birds to count!
Australia is on my bucket list, but it is about as far as I can go away from my farm and so is a bit intimidating to consider...but one can always dream.

4 X 8 Oil on Mounted Canvas Panel

These are Cristy Gylfpe's Irish Dexter heifers, Honey and Little Brown Jug. Unfamiliar with that breed? So was I before I started painting all these cows!  Originating in Ireland, Dexters are the smallest of the European breeds of cattle and are about 1/3 the size of a Holstein. They are often kept for both beef purposes and for milking, and are always solid in color.
Cristy lives in Colorado and her Dexters look like teddy bears in the winter, having adapted quite well to cold climates. Cristy is also an artist and you can find some of her beautifully colorful art HERE.

#29 Cow Licked by Vicki

6 X 6 Oil on Canvas
Check with artist for availability
This little calf was birthed by a cow named Vicki, and Vicki was owned by Rhoda Canning and her family. Vicki is no longer here, but like so many good family milk cows, her legacy lives on in her offspring.
To quote Rhoda regarding Vicki: "She loved people, lots and lots of scratches, anywhere.  She would lick you to death, she was quiet and easy going.  I would go out to say goodnight to her and she would lift her chin to have a good scratch, then she would burp, every time.  She also like to be brushed.  When I would put fly repellent on her, she would see me coming with the paper towel so I could wipe some on her face and ears and she would push her face into my hand to help, she knew relief was coming.  If I was bringing vegetables from the garden, she would know and be at the gate to meet me, she loved veggies and fruit."
There are many ways to interpret the term "family milk cow", and they are "family" in more ways than one....

#28 Dutch Belted Cow

6X6 Oil on canvas
Contact Artist for availability
Melissa of NONESUCH FARM shared this image of a Dutch Belted cow with me. Before I started this project, I was fairly ignorant of the variety of the breeds of cattle that are used for dairy purposes - especially those considered "dual purpose" - both milk AND meat producers. We used to raise Simmentals who also were "designed" for both meat and milk production in Switzerland, but the Dutch Belted are considerably smaller and more suited to today's family farm. Their distinctive coloration make them a certain eye catcher, too!

#27 - Spring Calf - First Taste of Green

6X8 Oil on Canvas $100

Spring is around the corner, and baby calves are already showing up. We have enjoyed a couple small rainfalls recently and the winter grass is "greening up" getting some growth to nourish the little ones. Abbey's 2 foster calves are doing very well - eating hay and nibbling at the little bit of green grass. I expect a huge growth spurt next month.

#26 - Rex the Wonder Horse - learning to drive

6 X 6 oil on mounted canvas $100
This painting has SOLD to an Arizona collector
This is Lisa Treat's Rex. She and Rex have been buddies for 12 years now, and Rex knows a lot, thanks to her...not only can he team rope, trail ride and gather cattle, but he can also pack. Lisa most recently taught him to drive pulling a buggy - always a fun learning experience for horse owners! Those of you who own "the  perfect equine buddy" know what a steadying influence they can be, and Rex is exactly that.
Lisa and her hubby live in Arizona, enjoying retirement with a barnyard full of critters, including mules, chickens, a cat, a dog and, of course, a milk cow. Life is good on the farm...

#25 - Sweetie Cow and Bucky

6 X 8 Oil on mounted canvas
This painting is SOLD
Misty and Michael Cooley of Laurel Creek Farms in Lewis County, Kentucky are fair representatives of the young people returning to an agricultural lifestyle on family farm land. Misty and Michael have 4 kids (God bless them!) and they are all now being raised on fresh milk.
Sweetie is aptly named - letting Misty milk her just about anywhere! Imagine a milk spigot handy when you need it - Sweetie provides that and more. The kids are learning to help with the cow (and other farm) chores. They assist with butter making and the produce harvesting and selling. In addition to the cow, the Cooley family also raises pigs, goats and bees.
Misty's family farm used to grow tobacco, and now it grows great Americans who are working hard to reap the rewards of life on this Laurel Creek family farm.

#24 - This LIttle Piggy Waits for Supper

6 X 6 oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
My FIRST piggy portrait!
This little porker is "Bacon" and he belonged to Tonya Harmon who claims him to have been "by far my favorite pig" with a personality like a big dog. "He would always trot happily along at my heels, hoping I would drop something yummy. It was on more than one occasion that I was jolted out of bed by my barking dog only to find Bacon standing on my porch. He just loved any kind of special attention and thought he was far superior to all other pigs here."
Tonya lives on Clover Hill Farm located in Goodview, Virginia. Like so many, she has a dream of being self sufficient on her small family farm and the dream gets closer every day!

This is Hamilton and he was raised by Audrey who lives in upstate New York. Hamilton lived a great life on her farm until he was 18 months old and then fulfilled his destiny of filling a freezer. Hamilton is the epitome of what we, small scale farmers, desire of our animals. A nurtured, cared for life with a dignified ending, continuing to nurture those that cared for them. The cycle of life.
I have come to discover that Audrey is a remarkable young woman with values and intellect that far exceed her youth. She is also lactose intolerant and like a number of people who suffer with this issue, came to discover that fresh milk is perfectly digestible. The purchase of a family milk cow brought all kinds of changes to her and her family and you can read about it HERE on her blog. Our numbers are growing....
Genesis 2:7
Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
