Limited Palette Cow 4 - by Debbie Grayson Lincoln

6 X 6 Oil on panel $100
Includes shipping and insurance U.S.
This is the last one of the series of limited palette cow paintings and I kinda like the little touches of violet. Have you been correct on the other three color schemes?
Today is "get ready for winter" day - there is an Arctic front due to hit us tomorrow evening, so today we are stocking up the firewood stacks, winterizing outdoor equipment, giving animals extra food and bedded shelter, and covering the garden as best we can. Temperatures in the twenties is not unusual here, but they are rarely sustained for very long, so I have found that if I cover garden plants with a variety of insulating materials, I can extend our growing season by a month or more. Plants like English peas and beets can take 20 degrees for several days, as can Spinach and Kale and Swiss chard. They'll come back better if I cover them up, though. The lettuce really doesn't like it much below 30, though, and if I cover it, it can take it down to 25. Below that it become chicken fodder.
Speaking of animal fodder, Aunt Abbey has decided that she loves beet tops. Her mouth starts drooling when she sees me coming with a bucket full. Next year I may plant twice as many just for her!
Have you guessed the colors yet? They are violet, yellow-orange, and yellow-green. I am looking forward to the next set of limited palette paintings, and I hope you are, too!

Kiss My Bevo .... - University of Texas UT mascot oil painting

6 X 8 Oil on linen panel -
SOLD to a Texas Collector
Immediately following the GREAT UT-Nebraska game, my blog had 7 viewers in a row searching for paintings of the University of Texas mascot, and this painting is a brazen result of those searches! Thank goodness I enjoy painting long horned cattle!
Since I mostly paint from my own photos or with permission from other photographers, AND I didn't have a personal photo of Bevo, this was a challenge. Since there are plenty of photos of Bevo on the internet, I used one of my neighbor's bull bodies and put Bevo's spots on him. They are far from perfect, but I think he's close enough.
This painting should be dry enough in time for Christmas - barely.

Longhorn Steer - UT Mascot

5 X 7 Longhorn Steer $115
SOLD to a Texas Collector
I need to do more "Texas" stuff for my upcoming shows this fall and Ron's cattle are providing me plenty of cow images, but I have to cross the highway to find steers. I have an image for a larger painting in mind using this steer, and I painted him this time with a pretty limited, untraditional palette. Something different...and enough orange to satisfy ANY University of Texas fans.

Texas Longhorn - University of Texas Mascot Painting

SOLD to a Texas Collector
5 X 7 Oil on Masonite $115 with FREE Texas made Cedar Frame
Includes shipping and insurance
I hope my brother doesn't see the title of this painting. He and I (and my son and husband) are all Texas Tech Red Raiders and the University of Texas is an arch rival. But I have mellowed in my old age - after all, my son-in-law is an Aggie and my daughter graduated from Tarleton, a member of the A & M system. None of those schools have a mascot that is as much fun to paint as a longhorn, though. At least in my opinion!
The model for this one belongs to a neighbor and he was an award winner in his prime - both in body conformation and horn growth. Lonnie actually owns several longhorn steers as well as a bull and a number of cows. People in Texas keep longhorn steers just because, and they don't feel the need to explain it any further. Some folks seem compelled to collect one of every color - which is probably impossible since there is a huge variety!
