#22 - Turkey Trot - turkey oil painting

6X6 oil on mounted canvas $100
SOLD
I believe this handsome turkey to be a Bourbon Red and he belongs to Kim Smith.
I am working on my chick order for this spring and I am thinking of including several turkey chicks in the order. We have had turkeys before, but it's been quite a while. I do not want the breast-heavy commercial turkeys. They cannot fly, nor are they very pretty, in my opinion. The Bourbon Red is a heritage breed, and I think they also are good at raising offspring. I don't plan to go in that direction, but I really would just like to have a home raised turkey for Thanksgiving this year. In fact I am toying with the idea of ALL home raised products for Thanksgiving this year. It wouldn't be very hard - especially if the bees cooperated and provide the honey for a pie!

#21 - Cat Portrait - calico cat painting

6X6 oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
I took a few liberties with the coloring of Arlene's cat - I don't think she is really this brilliant in life. But I have a fondness for calicoes, so that is what she became as I moved paint around.
Abbey's two adopted calves are figuring out how to get their meals most effectively. They have been here 2 weeks now and are just about over the trauma of moving to our farm. They received their last bottles this morning (I hope) and then were put with Aunt Abbey. Tonight they nursed entirely on their own and all three are spending the night together. I have high expectations for success...
SEE THE VIDEO HERE of this morning's breakfast.

#20 Dolly, The Provider - portrait of a Jersey Cow

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas $100
This painting is SOLD
Another cow portrait and an accompanying time lapse video (SEE IT HERE). This lovely animal is no longer alive - but her memory lingers with Janene, her owner and caregiver. Janene is also one of the moderators of the "Keeping a Family Cow" discussion board. If you want to learn about all things cow, this is the place (as well as all things chicken, bunnies, goats, pigs and sheep with an occasional horse!)
This challenge has been quite beneficial for me to practice small, planned paintings. It is teaching me to follow certain steps of production that I don't always follow...especially when I set up the camera to film a time lapse. I do not know how to edit the videos, so what I shoot (in one take) is what I get. And aside from knocking the tripod a couple times, they have all gone pretty smoothly.
I know ya'll must be getting bored with all the cow portraits, but I promise there are other animals coming up!

#19 - Dudley With an Attitude - Jersey bull portrait

6X8 oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
Meet Dudley. AKA Youstis. Owned by Oscar. Loaned to Karen. All live in Alabama.
If YOU lived in Alabama, the only way you could legally enjoy the delightful benefits and nutrition of fresh milk would be to raise the cow yourself. No where is it legal to sell it for human consumption.
In Texas, however, fresh (unpasteurized) milk is legal to sell, providing the dairy meets strict sanitary guidelines and gets certified. There are at least 3 dairies like this within 20 miles of me. Another way to enjoy fresh milk would be to join a farm co-op. Individuals purchase a share of the farms animals and/or produce. Not only do they share in the consumption of the produce, but they often share in the costs and actual production (hoeing, picking, milking, etc). In some states the legality of these co-ops have come under scrutiny. Fortunately in Texas, the rights of individuals to choose what nutrition they put in their bodies is still recognized.
Update on Aunt Abbey: As I reported earlier, we sold both of Aunt Abbey's 5 month old bull calves, and the same day we purchased 2 more babies from the sale barn. Both calves immediately got serious diarrhea (scours), though, partly because this cow's milk is about 33% cream - too rich for baby tummies. So I decided to milk the cow myself, separate the the cream, and then bottle feed the calves for a couple weeks until their digestive systems mature. As a result, I am tied to the farm, milking twice a day - which means clean the cow and equipment twice a day. AND feed the calves twice a day, plus in-between-feeding of electrolytes. AND then find someone to help consume all this EXTRA milk and cream!!!! I am freezing some of it, but Abbey makes 2 1/2 gallons of milk a day, 1/3 of it cream. The calves are only getting a 1 1/2 gallons right now. The fridge is full. But the CALVES are doing well, and that's good.....I'm tired.

#18 - Cow and Calf - time lapse video of painting

6 X 8 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
This is a relatively simple image, and what attracted me was the cow's angles. I do not know how old she is, but I do know she is a high producer and probably puts everything she has into milk. She belongs to another one of my KFC friends, so I DO know she is well cared for and well loved.
I painted this image quickly and did a time-lapse video of it so did not get into a lot of detail. The video is only a little over 3 minutes long - actual painting time was 77.6 minutes with 4556 images taken. The playback is 24 frames per second (for those of you who like math!), and you can see it HERE.

# 17 Bell in the Flowers - calf sniffing flowers

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
This is Bell and she lives with the Schlabachs who are located in the Shenandoah Valley, NW of Harrisonburg, Virginia. They raise "family sized Once A Day Milk cows and grass fed beef." Hard to find cows anywhere bettered loved or cared for....I promised to include a link to their website and HERE it is...so many lovely images and information. This is the way farms SHOULD be run - on a small scale where animals are treated with respect and the people that care for them reap the benefits of the diversity available from the land.

#16 Misty Sheep - just another day on the farm

6 X 8 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
Arlene, another KFC friend, sent the image for this latest painting in the series. I don't know Arlene personally but from the looks of her blog, they are living a dream life - and MILKING SHEEP and making cheese from it! I had never thought much about milk from woolies, but I know it's done, and there are even certain breeds of sheep (like cows) that are best for that endeavor. Read more about it HERE and get some great recipes and garden inspirations. Thanks, Arlene!

# 15 Donkey Afternoon

5X7 Oil on mounted canvas $85
Includes shipping and insurance US
I like donkeys and several of my neighbors have them, though I have yet to understand why. They ARE cute. But most are so wild that they cannot be caught. Instead, some coercive game must be played in order to catch them to give them inoculations, etc. And don't even mention hoof trimming - it never happens. Fortunately donkeys are pretty reliably healthy and require little care.
One neighbor's mare gave birth this past spring to this adorable little  white foal. Only his ears are tipped black. Need less to say, I always have my camera ready when I drive by his place.
The above old donkey is all white, too. I don't know her name, but I know her owner simply enjoys seeing her in the pasture. Perhaps that's reason enough for keeping donkeys...

# 14 You Go See Hugo

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
This is Hugo. Hugo is a sheep, I think. His image was sent to me by another one of my friends on the Keeping a Family Cow forum.  Did you know that there are a breed of sheep that are raised for their milk? I have only learned this recently, and I, at the age of 60, thought I was close to knowing everything. Nay nay....
What amazes me most about the KFC forum is the diversity of people who are choosing to hop off the fast track and seriously think about becoming independent from the conventional commercial distributions of food resources. So many of these folks are totally new to any agricultural endeavors (much like we were 40 years ago), and I find it wonderfully en-heartening to follow their efforts (and to offer my meager advice occasionally). Realizing how little I actually know seems to make me feel younger...now if only my knees would follow thusly...
Ecclesiastes 8:17

# 13 Ready to Go Anywhere With YOU

6X8 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
This is an English Shepherd who lives on a farm in North Dakota. Like most shepherds, I suspect he is always looking for a job to do and will be happy with a simple pat on the head for thanks.
His owner reports that the weather on "Simply Natural Farm" was 25 below zero yesterday. I feel almost guilty reporting that it was a lovely 65 here.
Texas gets a deserved number of curses in August, but occasionally January can be delightful.  Tomorrow more of the same. Time to get started on preparing for Spring planting....

# 12 Summer Ranges - thank you Michael Martin Murphey

6X8 Oil on mounted Canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance
I know. This is NOT a farm animal, but I just couldn't resist adding this to the que. My adorable friend Kelly Kines Crawford used to babysit my kids and even fitted and showed one of our Simmentals for us once - years ago when she was a student at Tarleton. Now she is a Mommy, too and she and her hubby, Steven, are ranchers and hunters - and they even lead hunts into the mountains of Colorado. This is from a photo Kelly took - one more reason to love the Rockies....
I took a time lapse video of me painting this and you can view it HERE.

# 11 Heifer Calf Two Step

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
I took some of my own advice when I painted this heifer. I used a larger-than-average flat brush and limited my palette, in an attempt to maintain color harmony.
Last night a friend from church called and reported "You said to let you know the next time I shot a pig. Well, I just did. Do you want it?" sigh
I am still not over this congestion virus/bacteria thing that is going around and my strength is really waning in the evening. I asked "How big?" and friend-with-a-pig said "About 50 pounds". I replied, "Sure, bring it over". I still needed to go out and feed the calves anyway, so I was not yet ready for bed.
What the heck. I have never dressed out a pig before (lots of deer, never pig). All the wild pig we have received have always been thoughtfully cleaned and already in a brining solution  - I have VERY nice friends and family!
While I waited, I prayed it wasn't one of those nasty prickly Russian boar/hog things that look like they are left over from an alien invasion movie.
Prayers were answered - it was a young female - 70 pounds. With a nice layer of fat, making me wish we had a reason for a luau! My Uncle Courtney smoked a whole pig once and I remember it was mouth watering.
I gutted and skinned it and put it in an ice chest to be packaged for the freezer later. I'll probably keep the rumps and tenderloin whole and grind up the rest. If the ribs aren't too shattered from the bullet, I may even cook them tomorrow.
The freezer is now officially full.
Deuteronomy 7:13
He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land—your grain, new wine and olive oil—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

# 10 There's More Than One Way to Reach an Itch

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
Renate lives in Kentucky and has a farm full of critters - including Jersey and Dexter milk cows as well as a herd of Scottish Highland cattle.  She also shares her farm with potbellied pigs, goats, chickens, dogs, cats, bunnies and assorted reptiles. The equines are well represented by a couple mini donkeys and this handsome mule with an itchy belly. Thanks, Renate, for allowing me to use your photo!
We have found new homes for both of Aunt Abbey's 5 month old calves, and since I am a lazy cow owner and don't want to milk every day, we needed another calf for Abbey to raise (and to help me with the milking). I had every intention of coming home with ONE black bull calf (they seem to sell the best), but you know the story about "the best laid plans..." Mike was with me, so it's not all my fault! It turned out to be a good decision to get 2 small, very lively and aggressive calves. Abbey is not a willing foster mom at first, but she cannot kick both calves at once!
This morning's feeding went well. While one dodged a hoof, the other went to town sucking. And Abbey did finally settle down eating her own breakfast after a few minutes.  I have high expectations for the future....

Hey - bison are raised on farms! In fact there are several herds in Texas and the meat is marketed locally. We usually eat ground bison when we go camping in Colorado and Wyoming...adds to the ambience!

# 8 Family Portrait

8 X 3 3/4 Oil on mounted canvas $75
Includes Shipping and Insurance US
It's Sunday when I am posting this, so I am using a small family portrait from the past:  babysitter Easy, and Dandy with momma PJ in the distance. Dandy spent more time growing up with Easy than she did her dam, and Easy acted like more like her momma than PJ ever did. I never worried about the coyotes when Dandy was little, with 2 pairs of eyes watching her.
Texas is getting its winter right now - 30 degrees and blustery winds. I am grateful that the garden is frozen and I have very few outside chores - my little studio stove is blazing as I type this Sunday morning.
I have sold both of Abbey's calves - one is still here, though, through Tuesday, keeping her milked so I don't have to. Monday I have plans to go to the sale barn and pick up one, maybe 2 more to foster onto her. It's not the best time of year to be working baby calves, but we have a good dry barn with stalls that they can nest in if needed.

# 7 Perfect Nursery - mare and foal oil painting

6X8 Oil on mounted canvas $100
This painting is SOLD
This image comes from another friend who regularly posts on the forum "Keeping a Family Cow".
There's not very many images prettier than a new foal in spring grass and wild flowers. I've had a few of those myself - over a dozen, as a matter of fact, with the last one being Miss Dandy five springs ago.  I wonder if old PJ has one more foal in her? No no no! Slap me before I breed my horse again!

# 6 Smart Enough to Get Out of Trouble - donkey painting

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
Another limited palette study with a minimum of brushwork, too. My prime motive in these little paintings is to explore not only assorted color combinations, but also the use of a variety of brushes.
An excellent way that a "feeling stale" artist can challenge themselves is to step away from the familiar. Whether it be subject matter, painting mediums or grounds, color palette or paint delivery.
I have discovered that I really like a fine weave canvas mounted on MDF board and I love painting animals. I'm sticking with those 2 elements. But I am stepping out on a limb with different palettes and brushes (or palette knives) and brush stroke techniques.
Many artists get caught up in the details and find themselves painting with smaller and smaller brushes. Try using a brush 2 sizes larger than you are used to, and use it for the entire paintings! If you are used to using a flat sable brush, try a hog's hair bristle round instead - and don't get too caught up in the details!

# 5 Could I BE any Cuter? German Shepherd Dog painting

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
This is Shannon Jones' German Shepherd puppy, Heidi. She reminds me a lot of my Trudy - bright eyed, curious, full of energy and probably a wagging tail that will knock you over! Shannon is one of my internet "family cow friends" and she sent the perfect picture for a pet portrait. Outside, interesting lighting and a large, clear image. THANK YOU, Shannon!
I am heading back home today after spending a week with my daughter's family. Baby Clara is a week old today and doing everything a newborn should do...eating, sleeping and pooping, with an occasional hour of wide-eyed inspection of her surroundings. Expect more boring grandma reports as time passes.
And I am still welcoming new animal images for this 50 paintings in 50 days animal painting challenge!

#4 Run Run Run - running horse oil painting

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas $100

A very limited palette here - and one I like. This is actually my horse, Easy, that I sold last year. I still have a number of images of him that are demanding to be painted.
I am in Bay City right now - getting to know my new granddaughter, Clara, and playing with her big sister, Addie. I am managing to continue to post paintings because I actually completed a few before I left. Hopefully I'll be able to maintain this momentum when I return home.
In the meantime, I am enjoying wet weather, my daughter and son-in-law's gracious home, and sticky fingered hugs. What more could a grandma want?

This is Annabelle and she belongs to Mary Kay...another friend on the Keeping a Family Cow information chat board. I am not sure what breed she represents, but her personality shines though! AND her full-body shot shows a very well-fed and loved heifer!

# 2 Hereford Madonna and Child

6 X 8 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance US
I have painted this cow once already - but not with a calf - and I used a different palette. This image comes from my own camera and is of a cow belonging to a neighbor. Angus and their assorted black-hued cousins have become very popular. It's becoming uncommon to see a full blood Hereford herd anymore, but this cow is a member of a really nice one. Originally from Herefordshire, England, there are now over 5,000,000 registered Hereford cattle around the world.
This cow is in excellent shape despite the drought. We have had a bit of rain recently, though, with more expected this week. Praise God!

# 1 You Think I Need Teeth Whitening?

6x6 Oil on mounted canvas $100
Includes shipping and insurance
Here is the first of my paintings from "donated" photos for my farm animal challenge of painting 50 little paintings in 50 days.
I regularly visit an on-line information board that discusses issues related to keeping a family milk cow and other assorted farm critters. This place holds a wealth of information and is managed by a group of moderators with uncanny ability to help both the total novice and the experienced well-informed farmer. I often think myself somewhere in the middle...until I have a problem. Then I discover how woefully ignorant I am when it comes to much of animal care. These people are SO SMART and have both the welfare of the animals and the people who care for them at the top of their list of requirements for success. If you are interested, it's called Keeping a Family Cow and I highly recommend it if you, like me, think that the farm life is a happy, healthy life.
This image comes from an member who lives in north-east Alabama - and she has every kind of farm animal there is AND she takes amazing photos. I look forward to painting many more from her images.
