#35 - Jessica's Cow

6X6 Oil on Panel

Farm chores are adding up - we are building raised beds this spring because my poor back just can't stand bending over much longer. I have been assured that this will be helpful - time will tell.
I am still painting farm animals from images sent to me by fellow farmers, cow owners and just plain animal lovers. This cow belongs to Jessica who is 14 years old and owns 14 cows! In her own words "I always say if you don't dream big you won't achieve big. Long live cowgirls."

#34 - Dexter Heifer in the Snow

5X7 Oil on Panel

Over 30 years ago, we had a lovely family milk cow that we called simply "Red Cow". She was a beef cow and we thought part Milking Shorthorn. Not only did she deliver lovely, beefy calves, but she also supplied my family with wonderful fresh milk. She was small, stocky, compact and efficient. And her personality was delightful as well...much like the Dexter breed of cattle. I have often thought if I could find another like her, I would do what it took to bring her home. Only other "cow people" understand what it's like to reminisce about "cows past".
We are in the middle of reworking the garden. The big "truck garden" is staying the same - we can do most of the hard work in that area with a tractor. But the small garden (which must be protected from hungry critters like marauding chickens) is getting more and more compromised by trees and shade and gets harder to till every year . So we are scaling it down by concentrating on 4 raised beds (easier on the back) that will be enclosed in a chicken-proof fence. This is no easy project for two 60+s with bad backs. Thank God for mechanical help in the form of front end loader tractors.
Jeremiah 32:22
You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.

#33 - Tallulah and Ginger in Queensland Australia

This lovely Jersey is Tallulah and her precocious Jersey/Dexter calf, Ginger. This image comes all the way from Queensland, Australia thanks to Tamara.
Tamara declares she lives with a menagerie of horses, an alpaca, goats, chickens, peafowl, guineas, turkeys, geese, cats, dogs and birds - as well as the the native Australian wildlife consisting of kangaroos, koalas, and too many more birds to count!
Australia is on my bucket list, but it is about as far as I can go away from my farm and so is a bit intimidating to consider...but one can always dream.
Ecclesiastes 5:3
dream comes when there are many cares, and many words mark the speech of a fool.

# 32 - Chicken Little - calico kitten painting

6X6 Oil on mounted canvas

This is Chicken Little and she is loved by Brody. Her momma showed up one day, and when she had kittens, Brody's mom, Liz, let her keep one. I'd say she kept the prettiest.
This kitty is one of many beloved animals on Everhope Farms in Stockdale, Texas, including Jersey cows.
Job 11:18
