Left Out - cow painting

12 X 20 Oil on stretched linen
Can be seen & purchased at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, TX
One of my "cow friends" requested a painting using our favored bovines as a part of this series. Again, we find the lone animal is not a part of the crowd, but one of the "girls" seem to be offering an invitation, and she is leaning in their direction as if to answer positively.
Luke 1:28
The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Purple Cow - experiment on un-primed linen

5 X 7 on unprimed, sized mounted linen
SOLD
Every now and then I try new grounds to paint on and this is sized, but unprimed linen. It has a very nice texture but was the devil to paint on. Since it was not primed, it absorbed paint like a sponge. I think a palette knife would have been a more appropriate way to spread paint around. I have a whole tablet of the stuff so I WILL try again - maybe using Liquin as a clear primer first so the natural color of the linen with show through.
Jude 1:19
These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

Supper's Ready - cow running for supper

8 X 8 Oil on panel
SOLD
Cows CAN hurry. In fact, I have seen Heifer Sophie move at a respectable gallop when motivated by food - and right now her favorite is watermelon rinds.
The garden has produced melons very well this year (all irrigated of course). Both cantaloupe and watermelons are ripening now, and our assorted farm critters gets the rinds. Cows and horses love the watermelons and chickens love cantaloupes - seeds included.
Isaiah 61:11
For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.

Freckles - holstein heifer portrait

6 X 8 Oil on panel $125
Includes shipping and insurance
Holsteins actually come in a variety of degrees of black and white. This pretty heifer is mostly white and I have seen some almost solid black ones. I doubt their production value varies with their coat pattern - most are genetically equipped to produced a LOT of milk regardless. When this heifer calves, I would have plenty hungry mouths lined up!
Psalm 34:10
The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing

Proud Gracie - Jersey Cow Portrait

8 X 8 oil on panel $125
Includes shipping and insurance U.S.
In case you hadn't noticed, there are a lot of us folks out here enjoying a self-sufficient lifestyle - raising our own vegetables and meat. And many of us have even ventured into keeping a family milk cow. The Jersey breed enjoys great popularity - I have a Jersey cross myself - but they can be a problem if you don't have a need for 5 to 10 gallons of milk a day! I feed "extra" milk to my dogs and chickens, but they can only eat so much. The perfect solution for us is to let Aunt Abbey raise extra calves. It takes a while, though, for the calves to get big enough to consume all she is producing. So I have been giving away milk (up to three gallons a day) to friends and family.
Today, however, I am grateful to announce that both calves are happily chugging down all of Abbey's bounty and we are no longer milking twice a day. Now I only get enough for our family - every 3 days or so - and the calves take care of the milk the rest of the time.  A perfect compromise.
For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.”

Left Out - completed

12 X 24 Oil on stretched linen
Available through the Dutch Art Gallery, Dallas, Texas
I am continuing to enjoy painting this series of animals (mostly horses) where one unique (and sometimes not so unique) animal is apart from the rest. Several viewers have felt compelled to write to me about these images, with each individual interpreting the paintings dramatically different.
Few people have not experienced the feeling of being alone in the middle of a crowd - for a variety of reasons. Teenagers are especially vulnerable and often give into peer pressure in order to remain a welcomed part of the gang.
I like to think that the single animal has CHOSEN to be left out and strike out on his own, despite the whisperings and finger pointing. The crowd doesn't always know where they are going...or why.
Exodus 23:2
“Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd"
