He's just checking the cows and the fence and the condition of the grass and looking for that sick cow that needs her foot doctored all while watching out for that big coyote who took down a calf last week. The cows know this "multi-tasker" is on their side and are unconcerned...

I am trying different limited palettes and this is another result. Cad red deep, Cad yellow, Ultramarine blue, dioxazine purple and white. And for fun, I used my I-phone to take the picture. Got a little glare, but it's not bad.

It's difficult for me to be an artist and NOT be political and imagine meaning in certain pieces. My mind wanders while working and I frequently make up stories to go with the illustrations - especially the more complicated paintings.
This is a simple painting but there's a lot of stuff going on. Cattle all traveling in one direction. It's dusty, so the way is not clear. But each follows the one in front - hoping that the destination is good and worth the trip. No map. No planning. Just follow the individual that's closest. Sound like a political statement to you?

Youthful Dreams - She's Not Dead Yet

This is my neighbor John's oldest cow. I don't know her name, but I do know that when he sold his whole herd of mixed-breed-partly-Brahma cows several years ago, he kept this cow and her little calf. I think she was the oldest cow in his herd at that time and the buyer may not have wanted her because of her size and age. Now John has all new cattle - all black, with a handsome Angus bull. I've never counted, but there's at least a dozen black cows and they all have perfect 3 month old black babies by their side. And then there's this old girl. Still making babies and taking good care of them and standing out in that green pasture full of black cattle. I will miss her when she's gone, but I suspect John will honor her with a safe place to spend the last of her days. He's that kinda guy.

Ma and Pa Cattle - Joined at the Hip

These two are a part of my neighbor's herd. John has a nice bunch of Angus cows that he bought as heifers last summer. They should be delivering his first set of calves this spring, and I sure hope he doesn't spend as much time helping heifers as I used to do when we raised Simmentals.
Many a night was spent in the barn waiting for a cow to calve and often having to help pull out a big baby. We had a couple C-Section deliveries, too, so I don't miss those days at all! Mike was working in town back them and since I had a home based business, I was the obvious one to lose sleep watching cows. All but one of John's cows are Angus, though, so I'm betting they'll be just fine. Angus cattle are known to be able to deliver and care for their babies quite well by themselves, thank you.
