I took a few liberties with the coloring of Arlene's cat - I don't think she is really this brilliant in life. But I have a fondness for calicoes, so that is what she became as I moved paint around.
Abbey's two adopted calves are figuring out how to get their meals most effectively. They have been here 2 weeks now and are just about over the trauma of moving to our farm. They received their last bottles this morning (I hope) and then were put with Aunt Abbey. Tonight they nursed entirely on their own and all three are spending the night together. I have high expectations for success...

OK - so I can't draw cats - I KNEW that going in, which is why I defined the square drawing area before starting the drawing lines. By doing that, it gives me hard reference points that can correspond to the photo.
I often draw grid lines on my canvas and corresponding lines on my reference photo to get the drawing correct. I don't care how good a painter you are - if the drawing is bad, the painting will be bad.

Child's Play - Cheap Entertainment

Yesterday afternoon my daughter, Merideth and I went to Ft Worth to get her dog groomed, to drop off some clothes at a consignment shop and to visit our favorite grocery store, Central Market. She is in her first year of teaching high school science, and confessed to me that she didn't have a clue when she first started. She loves the job and is already making plans for next year, but she really was naive when she started - like all of us when beginning a new job, I suspect. It seems like only yesterday she was this chubby little baby child chasing the cat around the backyard (cats are cheap entertainment, by the way - and a sweet natured one is worth its weight in gold). When she got a little older, this kitty let her dress it up in doll clothes and push her around in a buggy - and never complained or scratched.

Child's Play

This is a portrait of my daughter, Merideth, when she was around 2. We lived in the country then as we do now, and the best entertainment for that child was to carry a cat around the yard and play with it. We always seemed to have cats that would tolerate children warting them constantly. I can't remember either ever getting scratched or hurt in any way.

Animals are fun to paint, but difficult for me. We have 3 white kitties and I can't tell them apart anymore. This is the liveliest one though - a 6 month old female that was given to us (along with her brother) by my daughter's sister-in-law. She followed me around the front yard a couple days ago while I was photographing my horse (for the millionth time) and insisted that I pay attention to her - until she paused to scratch an itch.

Both animals of the earth and man were created by God on the sixth day. The Bible says we were to "rule" over them, and most theologians have interpretted that to mean "care for and use wisely." My life would be very sad without my critters in it.
